Superintendent Message

April 1, 2020 @ 2:30 pm

Although it has been a few days since I last communicated with families and patrons, there is little to report since my last message.  Monday night we did receive notice from the Oregon Department of Education that we are to shift from a model of providing learning resources to what is being called a “distance learning for all” model.  Since Tuesday morning our administrative team and teachers have begun to wrestle with this new directive.  For the time being, the work and resources that have been provided to you are still what your children should be working on.  Distance Learning for All is to be implemented starting Monday, April 13th.  We will be reviewing teacher and building plans for the remainder of this week and next to ensure the best program possible for each student.

Regarding the school calendar, we have not received any further guidance regarding the 2019/2020 school year.  The decision of whether schools are to extend the school year is at the discretion of the State Board of Education and/or the governor.  Which brings me to the most pressing topic for many of you, the Class of 2020.  A plan was discussed over a week ago at the state level.  To date there has been no decision on the class of 2020 relative to modifying or abbreviating graduation requirements and if they too will be required to extend the current school year.  Superintendents across the state were informed yesterday that this decision requires more vetting and support which may take a number of days or longer.

I appreciate your continued patience as we work through these uncharted waters.  I have likened our current situation to that of a burning house.  Under normal circumstances when a house is on fire, you first put the fire out, then assess the damages and at that point begin to rebuild the home.  However, in our current state of emergency, public education is being asked to assess and rebuild while the house is still burning!  With that said, thank you for our dedicated staff who are put in an unenviable position along with you and your students.   None of us asked or would have ever dreamt to be in this position.  Be well.
